Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I still use iStopMotion even if I do not have a DV camcorder?
A: Yes. The latest version of iStopMotion allows the user to import a series of individual images and transform them into a single DV file. The advantage of this is that iMovie can apply transitions which would not be possible with individual imported frames. This would also mean that in theory a stills camera could be used in place of a miniDV camera to create the stop frame animation. This could keep down the cost of animation work for schools without DV cameras.
Q: Why do my recorded images look so yellow?
A: t is likely that you will be filming under artificial light. To avoid the nasty yellow or green colour cast on your captured images, remember to set the white balance on the camera settings. This will give a much cleaner - truer colour representation.
Q: Why does the image drift in and out of focus?
A: Sometimes, especially if you are filming against a white background or in low light, the camcorder can hunt for a focused image (throwing your image out of focus for a time). This can be avoided by setting the focusing to manual. If you choose this option, be sure to check the image is in focus before each shot is taken - especially if you have zoomed in.
Q: My camera keeps auto powering off as I work. How can I stop it from happening?
A: There may be a setting on the camcorder to lengthen the auto power down period, or switch it off. It is also likely that you will have to take the tape out of your camcorder to prevent it from powering down after a minute or two.
Q: Why does my camera go through all of its image settings after a few minutes?
A: Some cameras have a demo mode - which triggers once the camera has been on for a minute or two but not actually recording to tape. To avoid this be sure to switch off demo mode in the camera settings.
Q: My animation is moving much too quickly. What can I do?
A: If your animation is moving too quickly, consider taking more frames for each model position. Simply hitting the 4 key on the keyboard will take 4 frames of your scene. Remember to move your model by just a tiny amount each time between shots.
Q: I have accidentally jogged the camcorder part way through filming. What can I do?
A: If you jog the camera on the tripod between shots, don't panic, simply line the image back up on the screen with the ghosted image on the preview.
