iMovie Tips

Titles in iMovie 06
The first thing to note is that Titles have moved to the 'Editing' tab, along with transitions and the like.

There is now a live preview in your video window, rather than a tiny thumbnail as in the previous version.

If you click in the video window once you have entered your title text, the position of the text can be altered. Once you are happy with the position, drag the title icon down onto the clips section of the video line.

Importing Video from digital cameras
It is possible to use iMovie to edit the video clips captured by many modern digital stills cameras.

When you start a new project, select iSight as the format.

NOTE: Your video clips MUST be at 640x480 resolution otherwise the quality will be very low. (iMovie upsamples smaller video and this leads to a very soft poor quality image).

Importing clips from DV camcorder
You may find that iMovie does not separate the imported video material into separate clips - instead having a single clip containing the entire movie.

The reason for this is that the time and date has not been set on the camcorder. iMovie depends on the time code to separate out the clips each time the camcorder has been restarted after a pause.

You may need to install or replace the 'button' battery on the camcorder.

Hacking iMovie's Preferences
iMovie relies on a preferences file whose entries govern numerous aspects of iMovie's operation. By editing this preferences file, you can customize iMovie. (This tip is not recommended for beginners) To find out more visit here:
